why didn't i think of that?

why didn't i think of that?

who needs the rubber chicken circuit! apparently, there’s a movement afoot to couple campaign fundraising with concerts. republicans and democrats alike are pairing campaign events with concerts, from the police shows to brooooooooooce, and even maroon 5 [note to self: who cares about maroon 5, and would any maroon 5 fans even have that kind of money to pony up, anyway?] i guess the bottom line for these artists would be to sell tickets (well, really, it’s to sell merchandise — that’s where the money is made, apparently). but you gotta wonder how they’ll feel when someone they don’t like is linking their name with the artist/s.

i’m waiting for BS to say he wants to suddenly contribute to Frank Pallone’s coffers to get better Bruce tix (pallone took the seat of a now-deceased former friend of BS’s.) [additional note to self: don’t forget to water the money tree in the backyard.]

i wonder where this will all lead. since conservative republicans will likely not be sponsoring anything at the bruce gig (doy!), will they start fundraisers at those christian rockfests? will that bumblebee christian metal band develop a resurgence? and what about the hip hop krewe?

i suspect one of the biggest political fundraisers, if anyone out there had a brain in his head, would be to create an event with tickets to see Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus. omg. i mean, hit up the parents, the ones with disposable income. and then hold onto your wallets, kids, while your tween grabs for it and begs you to support congressman so-and-so.

if nothing else, it might get your kid interested in the political process.

shadow of a doubt

shadow of a doubt

i’m getting material together to hopefully present at the first DC mortified show next month. (a friend of mine emailed me and told me about this. considering i kept copious journals throughout most of high school, i have a lot of fodder for such an enterprise.) after my first “audition,” i got some great and enthusiastic feedback. they were interested in certain threads of my teenaged life. of course, i’m not sure i want to go too deeply into one thread (one old but significant boyfriend), and i’m thinking more about another (about a less significant but terribly sad/funny boyfriend).

anyway, i met with one of the organizers yesterday to talk about what i’d found. after going through it all, i’m beginning to get a clearer picture of who i was as a teen, something which totally eluded me at the time. she’s really interested in my trying to glean from it all more about me — what i was feeling, who i was, why i was like that. i was pretty self-aware (although pretty clueless about why) at the time, so i’m digging it all up now. it’s sort of like self-analysis, and i can’t wait until a quiet moment hits and i have that aha! moment when i realize why i am like what i am today, based on my life as a teen.

but as i think about myself as a teen, it becomes incredibly clear what i wanted to be: a complex kid. i must have internalized tom petty in a big way. unfortunately, i think i hit a point where i was so complicated, i lost my own plot. some of the poetry i wrote back then completely baffles me.

and then i simplified, met BS, and the rest, as they say, is history 😉

The Great Mofo Delurk 2007

seriously, though. i get a gazillion 100+ hits every day — well, legitimate ones — i get a lot more from spammers — and yet i know only a scant few who actually ever stop to comment and say hi. (well, besides the spammers who are getting really interesting in their comment spam. thank G-d for Akismet!)

so c’mon every beatbox! say something. share your favorite recipe for anarchy! or chocolate brownies! or tell me you love me! (or not. but be kind about it.)

just let me know you’re out there 🙂

i got sunshine in my stomach

i got sunshine in my stomach

back in the mid-late 1970s, my oldest brother (known here as BTD, or my brother the doctor, as opposed to larry, the brother i call by name in here) used to DJ parties. when he and his friend lenny would go to a house, they had a little sheet of paper which noted bands they would not play. i believe they referred to them as head bands. we know plenty of them today as some of the monsters of progressive rock. one of the bands who made the proverbial list was genesis.

now, back then, genesis’ music wasn’t exactly party-friendly (although i can definitely dance along with things like i know what i like (in your wardrobe), unless, of course, your party involved a substance you smoked. that all changed in the early- to mid-1980s. i guess when peter gabriel left, phil collins started to push toward more commercial music. admittedly, i also enjoy stuff from the mid-1980s (save for anything solo post-phil collins’ 2nd solo album and certain songs that received monster airplay on MTV or due to use as a beer commercial bed), though genesis pretty much lost me by the end of that decade. instead, i delved deeper into older stuff (trick of the tail, especially songs like the gorgeous ripples — and yes, i know it’s a song about fairies and such — piss off, i can like songs about fairies!).

thus it is with people who like genesis. there is a camp that thrives, if not on peter gabriel era genesis, at least with the prog-rock era genesis. then, there is the modern era genesis fan, who discovered genesis via MTV, or, in the case of probably plenty of washingtonian fans, via Lite FM or perhaps via an elevator. sometimes, i am wildly embarrassed to attend shows in Washington. the fans, on the whole, have no sense of history and perhaps are there because their company has a certain number of seats to give away and they’ve snagged them. these are the people who left last night’s genesis show at the verizon center while the band was playing the carpet crawlers. these are the people who couldn’t handle virtuoso turns in blocks like in the cage / the cinema show / duke’s travels / afterglow and instead fled for the bathroom — and how on EARTH could anyone listen to that and not be moved? i actually cried, as i heard some of my favorite lines:

And I would search everywhere
Just to hear your call,
And walk upon stranger roads than this one
In a world I used to know before.
For now I’ve lost everything,
I give to you my soul.
The meaning of all that I believed before
Escapes me in this world of none,
I miss you more.

in short, these are probably the people who came to hear hold on my heart. yawn.

anyway, the band has grown older. but considering the technical challenges of some of the older stuff, i am willing to forgive a lot. for example, tony banks’ keyboards were sharp, and i don’t care. i would give my right whatever to hear tony banks play. or get a lesson from him. or have his out-of-wedlock love child. (maybe in that order.)

and phil. oh, phil. he of the tarzan soundtrack. he was in pretty fine form. he tried a bit more than roger daltrey did when we saw the who back in march. his drum duet with chester was jaw-dropping, and i loathe extended drum solos. but one tip, phil: you are no longer able to play the drums and sing simultaneously anymore. follow you, follow me, which was slower than normal to begin with, plodded erratically. it was painful to hear, though the washington crowd, ever discerning, didn’t seem to mind. phil, darling: let chester do that stuff. do what you do best: play to the crowd.

speaking of phil, there were moments during the evening when he resembled this. and then this. eek.

i rarely care about light shows, but i must say that the lighting was gorgeous. it’s hard to pick particular moments and describe appropriately, but this was a very creative display. the fireworks at the end, starting on the light screen and rising up to real fireworks, was incredibly fun. the show started nearly an hour late due to “power fluctuations” — so i’m glad they worked them out, especially for the lights.

i can’t comment on tonight, tonight, tonight or invisible touch. i hate them both. definitely bathroom time.

but in general, what a fun romp through the history of genesis. except for his face on certain montages, peter gabriel was definitely missed. but then again, he’s been missed for over 30 years. now THAT is a show i would pay through the nose for. and i was surprised that nothing from ABACAB ended up there. but last night’s show was definitely a great evening, in spite of technical problems, sound issues, and of course the issues that come with age. genesis gave as good as they got. and with their back catalog, they’ve got a lot to cover.

last night, when phil sang “it’s your show,” for those of us who adored genesis back in the day, well, it really was.

oscopies, oscopies: who's got the oscopies?

oscopies, oscopies: who's got the oscopies?

hope you enjoyed yesterday’s science projects 🙂

as far as yesterday’s oscopies are concerned: the prep was awful (per usual). i was frightened (per usual). the anesthesiologist couldn’t get me hooked up on my right side because my veins are apparently too tiny and uncooperative (not to mention i’m sure i was dehydrated), but he hooked me up just great on my left arm (though it’s in my wrist, so i now have a bandage around my wrist which, once again, makes me look like i tried to end it all by slitting my wrist). i never saw my doctor afterwards (apparently, he was knee deep in someone’s ass), though the little paper said that my colonoscopy was fine and that he removed a polyp from my stomach. i don’t know what to make of the polyp thing; it could be a big nothing. i just don’t know since this is all really a new body part thing for me. he also sent some stuff from my stomach out for study since there are certain bacteria that present that could be a precursor for stomach cancer, apparently. but i woke up beautifully and quickly (i metabolize very quickly) and ate a zillion graham crackers and cranberry juice. the nurses couldn’t have been nicer (although someone put me down originally for just a colonoscopy, not that AND an endoscopy) and they nearly forgot to get blood from me in the a.m.) but it’s done. for now.

and BS was a champ 🙂 he shuttled children all over the tri-state area AND dealt with a pretty tired wife. i looked at him last night and quoted from an old paul mccartney ditty that i love:

you gave me the answer to love eternally.

i love you, and you, you seem to like me.

okay. he probably does a bit more than like me in spite of the fact that i’m a major pain in the patoot 😉 so today, after many tears, i was able to get tickets for him (and me!) to see bruce springsteen. we’re sitting up with G-d, but who cares. we’re going. the damn things sold out in 4 minutes, and i was typing as fast as my little fingers could type. in the first minute, all i could get were nosebleeds. something’s just not right about that, as if all the good seats were already sold to someone somewhere.

but i’ve got too much to do to investigate that little annoyance. we’re going. i’m eating solid food. the kids are relatively happy. all’s right with the world.

this minute.

super why!

super why!

please G-d, get the super why! theme song out of my head!

it all started when i heard about this great new pbs kids show called super why! a wonderful reading show. i looked it up at pbskids.org to find it was not on yet. of course, they had a first episode on line, so jools immediately hooked himself up to it. and he hasn’t stopped since.

now, we TIVO the show, in spite of WETA’s and TIVO’s disagreement over when the show is actually on. and i’l be darned if the theme isn’t catchy, in that overblown, love boat theme meets something groovy circa 1972. (i wonder if lenny kravitz might be behind the music somehow.)

if it helps jools start down the happy course of reading, well, i’ll get over myself r e a l l y fast.

my brave boy

my brave boy

we all know that officials from the district of columbia move in mysterious ways. very little can explain things like this, for example. hell, very little can explain how marion barry continues to have a career in politics. but that’s the beauty and wonder of DC.

so it should come as no surprise to anyone that the licensure people from the district came to my son’s school the other day. for years and years, no one from DC licensing cared when kids’ lead tests were done. and here in VA, no one really cares after the 1st necessary one at a few months old.

surprise!

now they do. and if all of us folks don’t get lead tests on our kids by early october, well, there will be fines. inadvertent preschool dropouts. cats and dogs. living together. mass hysteria. you get the picture.

so today, instead of having a special day with jools, i had a morning of nooooooooooooo, mommy. i don’t want to have a blood test!
noooooooooooooooo!

now, i can’t blame the kid. of course, i get poked or jabbed at least once a month these days (and yesterday, i had a whopper of a shot in my knee, so believe me, i am empathetic). but when its a rare thing, like it is (thankfully) for poor jools, well, damn, it’s hard to explain. so you do what any sane parent does. you employ the most important survival tactic known to parents everywhere.

you bribe your child.

let’s see: the kid got a lollipop (before lunch! he gleefully told anyone within earshot! yep. a day without mama the hardass.) the kid got to eat chips from taco hell. and when we visited the library, the kid got to spend 30 minutes on the kids computer. 30. whole. minutes. and i neglected to find a book to read before that. so i sat and enjoyed the silent screen version of bailey’s bookhouse. for. 30. whole. minutes.

[somebody please help me. i’m melting.]

but you know what? the dude earned it. we sat there, with gospel music blaring from the phlebotemist’s radio, and the dude barely even whimpered. he even thanked the lady for the bugs bunny band aid. maybe it was the gospel stuff. who the hell knows.

all i know is that i can hardly wait for flu shots…

broooooooooooooooce!

broooooooooooooooce!

jersey girl alert: bruce is coming to town (if you say bruce who, well, i might just smack ya upside da head) with a new album to push (radio nowhere is the first release). so yeah, he looks a little like a rahway resident on the cover. so what?

i always *heart* the albums with the E Street Band the best (even if patti scialfa’s voice grates on my nerves. don’t get me wrong; i’m glad he ended up with a jersey girl instead of julianne whats-her-name.) i wondered about fans who attended his last tour and were annoyed by the whole jug-band thing. i mean, what the hell — did they think he was going to belt out born to run on a tuba?

want a fun little tour of BS’s hometown, which also happens to be the Boss’s hometown? tee hee, i remember holding the camera for some of the shots. course, the place has changed a LOT since a decade’s gone by…

but i digress.  i’m just hoping i don’t have to cut into the kids’ college funds for tickets this time. if only the newsweek link was still live recounting the tale of BS competing, unknowingly, with one of his sisters, for a VH1 charity package of backstage passes and front-row seats.  this sort of thing only happens to us.

yep. we’re revisiting a portion of our youth today. it’s kind of fun to revisit youth with a little more money. although frankly, given the choice, i think i’d still take the youth.

high school musical II

high school musical II

you know, i’ve reared my kids on the classics: the beatles, the stones, the ramones, bob marley, the white stripes… okay, the white stripes are a little too new. but still. my kids can sing along with bruce and bono… and yet BC has gone and gotten herself hooked on high school musical, which now includes the sequel.

(which, btw, just set a record as the most watched basic cable program. ever.)

tweens galore want to look like the leads. and BC, being a red-blooded american tween, adores them. especially sharpay. and mama, if you tell me sharpay is also the name of a dog [misspelled, i would add], i’m gonna scream! yes, making fun of every aspect of high school musical and it’s sequel, while akin to shooting the proverbial fish in a barrel, is a no-win proposition. they love it.

on the bright side, the kids in the movie are allegedly a lot better behaved off-screen than, say, lindsay lohan, another star who made her mark in the disney stable of stars. not that la lohan hasn’t valuably taught my daughter than drugs and alcohol a mess can make.

but sheesh. my teeth hurt from watching this treacle.

at the B E A C H

at the B E A C H

it’s hot out. the tomatoes in my backyard are withering on the vines, and apparently, they’re not alone. my hair is frizzing beyond belief. even local cheese cutters are suffering. hey, we all like summer, but this one’s just a little out of control. thanks a lot, global warming!

we’re doing our part here to pretend we’re somewhere cool. a friend of mine from high school, who has been making a career as a children’s entertainer, has one particular song that my kids really, really love. i know musically that this guy and i were listening to a lot of the same stuff when we were younger, and it’s nice to see it surfacing in his work 🙂

and yes, i admit; i like the ’80s riff of it, too. and it makes us pine for the B E A C H – BEACH!

(although the very excellent guitar-playing dad to yosi’s left is creeping me out, ever so slightly 😉
